Monday 31st, 2010 - Newsletter “Montreal - The GEOS Insider”

Welcome to our May newsletter. May was a nice month. We enjoyed many sunny and warm days even if it did not start off that way. Since the 15th, the temperature has been averaging around 25C. This announces the beginning of barbecues and other outdoor activities. We just have to take the advantage of the great season ahead along with all the festivals which will start soon!

Alex is our teacher for our levels 4, 5 and our TOEFL preparation class.

“Hi my name is Alex Contreras. I'm from the beautiful city of Ottawa, but I've been living in Montreal since 2001. By the way, Montreal, for three and a half months of the year (summer), is the best city in  the world.  I love teaching at GEOS, which I've been doing for almost two years now. These two years have honestly been the best of my life for many reasons, but a big part of what makes me happy are the wonderful students that I have. They teach me funny, interesting, shocking, and unbelievable things on a daily basis. I just try to do my best and return the favour every time I'm in class. In addition to teaching, I also do acting, writing, and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu (which I don't suggest you google). After all that, and taking care of my angelic little daughter Miya, I don't have much free time, but I have been known to spend it looking up facts on Wikipedia so that I can win games of Trivial Pursuit. Did you know that Ghengis Khan is the direct ancestor of 0.5% of the world's male population today? Well, you do now!"

Like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is practically impossible to visit Montréal without seeing Mount Royal and enjoying the view from the top of the mountain.
A little bit of history: Mount Royal Park was officially inaugurated with great pomp and circumstance on Victoria Day, May 24, 1876. This mountain is one of the Monteal’s largest green space and without any doubts the most famous one. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted who also designed New York’s Central Park. To Montrealers, Mount Royal is much more than a mountain. It’s a testimony to their city’s evolution, a precious gem that they were able to preserve from urban development. They are proud of it, and rightly so. Now this is one of the most famous places in Montreal to enjoy nice spring and summer days. Mount Royal hosts also a popular activity known as the “Tam Jam” where a number of Montrealers and visitors play hand drums in the Park every Sunday during the summer.

School Activities

Our students enjoyed our outdoor activities this month. We started May with a Bagel tour. We decided to go to one of the oldest and most famous places in Montreal for bagels: Saint Fairmount Bagel. This place exists since 1919 and is located in the nice neighborhood of Mile End. It was interesting to see how real tasty bagels are traditionally prepared. On Saturday, in spite of the rain, an excursion to the Ottawa tulip festival was organized. This is the world’s largest tulip festival with attendance of over 500,000 visitors annually.
The second week end, a trip to Toronto and Niagara falls was organized with the school. The weather was beautiful to appreciate this beautiful time and scenery in those 2 places.
During the last weekend of this month, we were captivated by an amazing show of the Montreal based Cirque du Soleil called Totem. We recommend this show to everybody which will be presented during the summer at the Old Port.

We finished this month with Montreal’s Museum Day, giving us the opportunity to visit the many museums of the city for free.  However, it was important to select which museums to visit because one day wasn’t enough time to visit all of them.

In order to be informed on our activities, you can always check our calendars on our website http://www.geosmontreal.com/activities.

What is happening in June in Montreal?

June is the beginning of the festival season in Montreal. And to start this wonderful and exiting period, what could be better than sharing “a cold one” with friends at the Beer festival? Then, you will enjoy the International Feux Loto-Quebec (a firework festival). You will also appreciate the concerts with the Francofolies music festival (www.francofolies.com) which presents a lot of French singers from France, Quebec and other French speaking countries.  Last but not least you will enjoy the famous and world renowned International jazz festival (www.montrealjazzfest.com) which celebrates its 31st edition. June 24th is a provincial holiday called the Saint-Jean-Baptiste. On that day, you can enjoy the fireworks at night as well as a huge show in Park Lafontaine showcasing famous Quebec artists.
