Welcome to our March Newsletter. We have been so lucky with the winter this year. We had a short, sunny and nice winter. We even had some temperature up to 15C in the beginning of March. This is something very exceptional. We had a few rainy days but overall, we can not complain! Now, we have to hope that it stays constant and that our spring and summer seasons will be enjoyable as well!
A new bus line, the 747 express bus will drive you to the international airport Trudeau from the metro station Berri - UQAM for $7. I fyou would like more information, please check on their website: http://www.stm.info/info/747.htm?gclid=CLmvvbLv6qACFQuB5QodTnBLNw.
This month, we welcome a new French teacher for our evening class: Laetitia. I would also like to mention that our favorite intern, Gabi, found a job in the YMCA (sport center) and will teach different classes like steps and cycling, starting in the spring session. Whoever feels like exercising with a very nice and dynamic teacher is welcomed to join Gabi’s classes.
We enjoyed going on activities this month. The first weekend, we went to eat a smoked meat sandwich not at the famous “Schwatz” but at “The Main”. I actually think that they served as good smoked meat sandwiches as the ones from “Schwatz”. And at least, you do not have a big line up. Students enjoyed it and would recommend to visitors to eat a smoked meat sandwich instead of a poutine.
The weekend after, we went to play paintball. We were 13 playing in two teams. We had fun.
The following weekend, we went to play bowling. It’s always nice to play bowling to end up with the week! Also during this month, our teacher Dean launched his book named “The Fish”. Some of us already bought his book and just loved it. So if you are interested in reading something nice and interesting, you can buy it at Drawn and Quarterly (211 Bernard West) or simply ask Dean at school.
This month, we decorated our school twice: for Saint Patrick day (everything in green) and for Easter. March marked also the beginning of spring. It’s such a nice feeling to know that we enter spring. No more snow storms and cold weather (hopefully!). We can put away our boots, scarves and coats and slowly start putting lighter clothes.
What is happening in April in Montreal?
April offers few festivals. If you would like to go out, you can visit the Bleu Metropolis, a Montreal International Literary Festival from April 21st to April 25th, as well as the Festivalissimo, an Iberian-Latin American festival, from April 22nd to May 9th. For an exotic festival, we also have the FESTIRAAM, an African and Caribbean music fest, on the weekend of April 24th. To finish with the activities, I would like to wish to people who live in Montreal a happy three weekend and take advantage of it to travel a bit.
"Hi, I am Gabriella Varga, aerobics and personal trainer. I have been in Montreal since January 2009. I started to learn English at GEOS when I arrived here. Later I applied for internship program. I could continue my studies as an internship student and I started to work at GEOS at the same time. I have met many nice people from around the world. I found some really good friends as well. Thank to GEOS I can work in a great atmosphere with a lovely staff. It was a good start to integrate in a new community in another culture. Now, I also work as an aerobics instructor at YMCA, what I was looking for because that is my hobby and passion. Helping people to reach their goals, to choose a healthier life. Let's meet in GEOS or an one of my step or cycling class."
“I arrived in Montreal one year and 8 months ago and I like this City. There are a lot of cultures and you can meet a friend of different nationality. I started studying in GEOS a month ago. I like this school, the personal is very friendly, helpful and the teachers are very professional. I studied English just for one month and I can feel the difference. So, I hope that everybody could enjoy his stay in Montreal and GEOS. GOOD LUCK !."

“Easter is the oldest and most important Christian holiday, marking the end of the fasting season of Lent and the death, on Good (derived from God's) Friday and resurrection of Jesus Christ, on Easter Sunday. It has deeper and more complex associations than Christmas, particularly in the Orthodox Christian world. There are many customs and traditions associated with Easter which, like most other holiday and feast days. Why have rabbits and eggs become linked with Easter? Eggs are ancient symbols of fertility, for very obvious reasons. An egg has also been seen to be associated with the rebirth or resurrection of Christ. The custom of eating them also derives from the fact that they were forbidden during Lent. The Easter bunny or rabbit comes from the hare, another ancient, pre-Christian symbol of fertility associated with spring."
